THE ARTIST
At 40, he walked away from the job title of Vice President to dedicate himself to singing. By 50, he had sung to more than 200,000 people across India, Thailand, and the UAE.
Meet 2Blue: singer, actor, and believer in the power of possibility.
As lead singer of Vayu, 2Blue became synonymous with the spirit of Indian rock. Then he forged a distinctive solo career, performed with members of Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, and Dokken, and played the lead roles in Jesus Christ Superstar and Jaya: The Victory. His new album, Dance With Infinity, reflects what he stands for. It's a statement about living without limits.
THE STORY SO FAR
FROM AGARTALA TO THE WORLD
In the 2016 sequel to Rock On, Farhan Akhtar pulls out an album from a pile of old records. Purab Kohli recognises the artwork and says, “Vayu! Hatke sound tha in logon ka, yaad hai?” Vayu! They had a unique sound of their own, remember? Then he turns to Arjun Rampal and says, “Yaar Joe, inka lead singer kaha hai aaj kal?" Hey Joe, where is their lead singer these days?
For millennials raised on Indian rock, that scene held more truth than fiction. Because that lead singer was Tirthankar Poddar, better known as 2Blue: the boy from Agartala who left home, quit his job, and headlined their college festival.
THE HIGHEST REWARD
What followed Vayu was a new phase of reinvention. The stages got bigger and the collaborations more diverse. 2Blue performed with Bumblefoot of Guns N’ Roses, Paul Di’Anno of Iron Maiden, and George Lynch of Dokken. He played Judas in Alyque Padamsee’s landmark production of Jesus Christ Superstar and Yudhishthira in Lillete Dubey’s Jaya: The Victory. Along the way came ‘Best Band’ at Hungama, India and ‘Anthem Of The Year’ at the AVIMA Awards, Asia. His highest reward, though, remains his audience. They came for the music. But they stayed for him.
THE HOMECOMING
For those who were there from the start, 2Blue’s new album is a homecoming. What started at their college festival has survived MySpace, Orkut, career, marriage, parenthood, and everything else that life tossed their way. The music has become a reminder of how limitless they once felt. That is the essence of the new album, Dance With Infinity.
